The simple answer is that the mileage is something you determine with your caregiver.

  • The IRS determines on a yearly basis the mileage reimbursement rate
  • Beginning January 2017, the reimbursement rate is 53.5 cents per mile for business miles driven
  • This rate covers the cost of gasoline and wear and tear on the car driven while “on the job.” 
  • The mileage reimbursement is not considered taxable compensation, so the employer and employee are not required to pay taxes on this compensation.
  • Mileage reimbursement commuting to and from a job is not considered “on the job” and is taxable compensation per IRS regulations. (Source: IRS.gov)
